The Texas cattle trade
After the Civil War, Texas cattle were driven north to railheads in Kansas. In the backstory, Jay uses his trail wages and cattle accepted as pay to establish his ranch.
A changing frontier
The Frontier Battalion formed in 1874 as Texas reorganized its Rangers. Its work shifted from frontier scouting toward law enforcement as the decade passed.
Fence and drought
Fences changed access to grazing and water, and drought left ranchers with more cattle than the range could support. These conditions shape Jay’s ranching decisions and his work as sheriff in 1887.
